Lennie Pond relieved Richard Petty during the second half of the race
Jim Vandiver, who was dealing with a child custody case with his first wife, was suppose to appear in a Greenville, South Carolina court on Friday for a hearing. He was told by his lawyer that appearing would not be necessary because he was expected in Darlington. The judge at the hearing did not consider this grounds for absence, and found Vandiver in contempt of court. An arrest warrant was issued, with two officers ready to arrest him after the race. On lap 223 he was already nursing a problematic engine, deliberately spun his car on the backstretch. This caused a caution, Vandiver jumped the back fence and left the track, He hitchhiked to Monroe, North Carolina, and avoided arrest on race day.
