In June 2023, our site added the basic information for the Nurburgring-era of the event, and will add more information when time permits.

This event has gone through many iterations.

First, from 1931-1960, it was a road rally going from Liege, France to Rome, Italy, and back again. (Often called Liege-Rome-Liege)

Second, from 1961-1964, a road rally going from Liege, France to Sofia, Bulgaria, and back again. (Often called Liege-Sofia-Liege)

Finally, due to safety concerns, from 1965-1971 the event moved to the closed-circuit Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany, and was changed to a timed race. First being 82-hours, then 84-hours from 1966-1970, and the final running lasting 96-hours. This final running is most likely the longest continuous race ever contested in terms of both time and distance, with the winner completing over 13,000 kilometers (over 8,000 miles) over the course of the 4 full days.

The event was not run in 1936, nor from 1940-1949.
