2010 Free State 500
Phasika Freedway
January 31, 2010
Fin St # Driver Sponsor Make Laps Status

The 2010 Free State 500 was an American Speed Association Transcontinental Series event held at Phasika Freeway on January 31, 2010. It was a special exhibition race held by the ASA in Welkom, Free State, South Africa and featured an unique mix of international drivers. It was the first ever race held in Africa by an American stock car racing sanctioning body.

NASCAR legend Geoffrey Bodine dominated the event until two laps to go, when a mechanical gremlins bit his car and forced him to 10th. Toni Marie McCray appeared to be in the fast lane to victory as she took the lead. But Briton John Mickel made a fantastic charge and took the lead with just half a lap to go. He went onto win, holding off McCray and Marc Davis. Davis was competing in his first race since the tragic loss of his father just a week and a half prior.
